STI Treatment

What are the Different Types of Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs)?

Sexually transmitted can be divided into two categories - bacterial and viral.

Bacterial STIs include:

  • Gonorrhea
  • Chlamydia
  • Syphilis
  • Trichomonas

Viral STIs include:

  • HIV
  • Herpes
  • Hepatitis
  • Human Papilloma Virus (HPV)

What are the Symptoms of STIs?

Depending on the infection the symptoms can vary widely.

  • For chlamydia and gonorrhea symptoms can include:
    • A green or yellow vaginal or penile discharge
    • Burning sensation with urination
    • Needing to urinate more frequently or having more urgency to urinate when the feeling comes on
    • It is also not uncommon (between 25% and 40%) of patients to have one of
these infections and have zero symptoms.
  • Herpes: the symptoms include very painful blisters that turn into painful ulcers. These blisters and ulcers can last up to 2 weeks.
  • For Syphilis the ulcers are painless and do not hurt or burn
  • Hepatitis: Symptoms can include fever, nausea, body aches, & yellowing of the skin
  • HIV: This virus can sometimes present with a flu like illness 1-2 weeks after exposure. Other than this there are no other symptoms. We recommend annual screening for any one at risk for HIV contamination.
  • HPV: For men this will present with warts on the penis. For women it requires pelvic exams. We recommend females starting at 18 be screened for HPV every 3-5 years with your PCP.

What are the Screening and Treatment Options for STIs?

Depending on the infection screening can be done in a variety of ways. We will cover the STIs we screen for and treat at Pinnacle Urgent Care.

  • Chlamydia and Gonorrhea: For anyone with symptoms consistent with this infection or exposure to this infection, allow one of our clinicians to evaluate you and send a urine sample off for screening. The treatment includes antibiotics and will cure these infections.
  • Syphilis: This infection will present with a typical rash on the genital area. As such, our clinicians can screen you by asking if there is a rash or examining the rash. Treatment includes an antibiotic.
  • Herpes: Should one of our clinicians decide one of the ulcers or blisters may represent a herpes sore, he/she may elect to do a viral swab of the sore and send to our laboratory. These sores can be treated with an antiviral but do tend to recur at some point in the future.
  • HIV: At Pinnacle Urgent Care, we are happy to screen and test patients with blood work for HIV infection. If positive we will refer you to either your primary care provider or an infectious disease specialist to discuss treatment options.
